January 2023

Winter acrostic

Wet, soggy roads
Interrupt the daily commute
Now
That January is here.
Enter the freeway at your own
Risk.

Hazardous Laundry

Don’t tell me doing laundry
isn’t dangerous
or that scrambling down
stairs isn’t hazardous.

And I won’t tell you all
about my traumatic fall
and how a bag of dirty socks and undies in one hand
and a bag of sweat stained shirts and shorts in the other hand
and an ankle traumatized from years of abuse
and a poorly placed extension cord
all led to an unlucky fall and subsequent land-
ing at the bottom of the flight
of narrow and deceptively dangerous
stairs early last night.

Not a chaos poem

Fourmis, or French Ants
Paris is lovers strolling hand in hand by moonlight
and joyous chatter spilling out light infused sidewalk cafes.
Paris is Eiffel’s sparkling steel structure overseeing the bustling streets and busy restaurants and burgeoning nightlife
and Paris is water taxis jetting down the magnificent Seine River.
Paris is rain storms following heatwaves,
and Americans all packed in one dining room upstairs – the one with air conditioning.
Paris is massive lines of tourists waiting to see Mona Lisa, Eiffel’s Tower, and Château de Versailles.
Paris is tacky tourist shops,
and street vendors preying on the unsuspecting- the friendship bracelet scam is real.
And Paris is an expensive hotel room with no windows, with no view,
but with ants.

Paris in June 2022 – a companion to the poem

According to several travel pros out there, you can skip touring the Eiffel Tower and still SEE the Eiffel Tower. That’s one of the coolest things about the Eiffel Tower – you can see it’s towering steel frame throughout Paris. But skip a trip to the summit of the famous tower?

Personally, I think the only reason to skip a trip to the top is because you can’t get tickets. That almost happened to my sons and I – but we lucked out – right as we passed under the sold out sign – it disappeared, and my son noticed – so we checked it out – and got tickets to the top! Absolutely a highlight for them – and even though I had been to the top before,  it was not at sunset (10 pm) and back then I wasn’t responsible for anyone else’s enjoyment but my own.

Wednesday Poem Prompt  571

Rules Poem

Crystal Clear

Rules are crystal vases, simply broken,
In school, in life, written or spoken.
They support routine
And use discipline
But when stretched or bent, are merely token.

A five-line Limerick

A limerick is supposed to be humorous. I missed the mark there. But I got the five lines and made sure lines 1,2, and 5 somewhat rhyme, are between 7-10 syllables and share the same rhythm.  Lines 3 and 4 are shorter with 5 syllables, rhyme, and share rhythm.

Prompt 3, a Sensory Lies poem

from Smash Poetry Journal by Robert Lee Brewer.

Bouquet

Overbearing lilies hog the spotlight,
their sickly-sweet brutishness
assaults, with a heavy, damp stench, the innocent.
Between blossoms and blooms
spring sprigs of sharp green rescuers,
naive breath of a babe
bridge the stars to their supporters,
stems and baby’s breath, movie extras with no lines,
reduced to the role
they were born to play.

Prompt 4, Insectum
La Cucaracha

The Indestructible:
When threatened
with the stomp of your shoe
or thwack from your broom,
the indestructible transmute
from Godzilla fat
to paper-thin flat.

Self-education on

Pre-game
Post-game
press conference
Promos

Fans do not merely watch
Fans study every minute of every game.
Rewind, rewatch, repeat.

Outcome oriented.
Team victories alone don’t cut it.
One particular player’s success, particularly,
Determines the day.
Strong elation, weak despair,
If the unthinkable happens?
Injured devastation.
Nightly prayers for a
Strong performance,
Invincibility,
Victorious outcome.
Please no injuries!

Prompt 567 6.2.21:
A Condition Poem

Conditioned

We applaud the performance,
Cheer the good plays,
Boo whom disappoints,
Jeer the unacceptable,

Which is easier?
Which requires more effort?
More bravery?

Twitter hate ruins,
Breeds toxicity.

Recondition
Love, not hate.
Be positive, build up
Stop tearing down.
Love and support others to
Love and support yourself.
